'99 Homes' Andrew Garfield discusses the movie, our roles in society and why he will never have a reality show.
Do you feel you have a responsibility as an actor. You’ve been Spider-Man. You’ve don’t some things and people know who you are. Do you feel a responsibility to give back more so than if you were waiting tables between gigs?
Excellent question. I think I feel the responsibility anyways. The position that I find myself in puts a bit of added pressure on me, just from myself. No one is putting the pressure on me. I’ve been given this or I’ve been given this so I better say something and have an action to back up what I say. It’s all well and good saying I want to change things, but I’ve got to back it up. There’s a part of me that could say say fuck it and not do anything real with my life.
Like have your own reality show?
Oh my God. It would be the most boring and uncomfortable reality show. It would be so dull.
So E! or Bravo won’t pick it up?
I don’t think so [laughs]. But I do ask myself, ‘what do I do with this?’ I feel the responsibility with or without the position I’m in. I have a true and sincere desire to bring myself to the world in whatever way I’m supposed to. I don’t know what that is yet.
You mentioned bringing yourself into the world. You have a platform so maybe people will listen to you.
I care about people. We all have so much to give and that’s the strange thing is because many of us are told we don’t [have anything to give]. We all have so much to offer to each other. I have stuff to offer and I find it on a daily basis. I find it through telling stories. I find it through making films and theater. I find it through occasionally a great interview like this one. I’m excited to keep discovering what that is through myself.
99 Homes is now playing in select theaters nationwide.
