Kristen Schaal and Mary Steenburgen chat about working on '30 Rock' and 'A Walk in the Woods.'
Mary: For me, the biggest surprise was my own reaction, particularly to Robert Redford. Unlike a lot of the guys that I’ve worked with, I hadn’t gone to watch them in a movie when I was 12 years old to see The Way We Were or something like that. I didn’t expect it, but as soon as I was around him, I was a star struck 12-year-old. When I went through the stills from the movie, in every single shot I’m going like [making a 12-year-old star struck face]. I have this stupid grin on my face [laughing].
I’ve liked a lot of guys I’ve worked with, but not in the way that you feel about somebody you had admired when you were young. I just felt honored to be there and that’s why I [took the role]. I had always wanted to work with him. I didn’t know if I ever would so when I was asked, I said yes. I’m really glad I did because he really lived up to all expectations.
And Nick Nolte really does tell the most outrageous stories.
That’s not surprising.
Mary: Oh my God. And he remembers everything! I didn’t feel like a job. I was just sitting there listening to these guys talk.
Did you take a selfie?
Mary: I should have done that. I was too shy. I actually thought about it today. I thought, ‘dammit, I’m going to get my picture taken with him today.’ Although there are stills from the movie, it’s not the same thing.
Kristen: I worked it with [Robert’s] assistant so I could get an autograph for my mom. They get asked for autographs so much. I caught a good window when his hand wasn’t cramped for signing autographs I guess. It was illegible but my mom treasured it.
So do you hike in real life or anything to stay in shape?
Kristen: Oh thank you for noticing [laughing].
Mary: I do hike. I can’t stand indoor gyms. [Ted Danson and I] live part-time in Ojai so we know all the trails in Ojai really, really well.
Kristen: I’m not much of a hiker, but I’d like to be. I run until my knee hurts and then I won’t do anything for like three months.
