A new study confirms e-cigarette use as gateway to traditional smoking among teenagers

A new study confirms the link between using e-cigarettes and traditional cigarettes for teenagers and young adults.

The study discovered that teenagers were more likely to smoke cigarettes after having used e-cigarettes compared to those who never used electronic smoking devices to begin with, according to Reuters.

The National Cancer Institute sponsored the researchers of the study from the University of Pittsburgh and Dartmouth-Hitchcock Norris Cotton Cancer Center. In the study, they observed 694 people ages 16 to 26 who initially had no intention of smoking traditional cigarettes. At that time, 16 of them were already using e-cigarettes.

The researchers checked back in with the group after one year finding that six of the original e-cigarette users had moved on to traditional cigarettes compared to the 65 who were not using e-cigarettes to begin with.

Five of the other e-cigarette users could no longer confirm that they would not be likely to smoke cigarettes compared to the 63 of those who were not using e-cigarettes at the beginning of the trial.

Although the study revealed some interesting facts, the relatively small number of people using e-cigarettes at the beginning of the trial put a limitation on the findings. In order to confirm the findings, researchers said they would need to replicate the study using a larger e-cigarette user sample.

The study was published online Tuesday and will be in the November issue of the journal PAMA Pediatrics. The topic of research is one at the top of the list for many experts wanting to draw attention to the dangers of e-cigarette use in young adults.

At this time, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (USDA) is still deciding how they are going to regulate the electronic products. In that decision they will have to weigh how heavily the initial idea of cutting the rate of disease in traditional smokers will be in terms of regulations. Whereas health advocates are more concerned with the products introducing a mass population of young people to nicotine, acting as a gateway to traditional smoking.
