Ferguson has just been cast in an awesome new role with Emily Blunt as her stardom rises.
Rebecca Ferguson, the Swedish gun-wielding star of Mission: Impossible alongside Tom Cruise, may be the breakout star of 2015 as she lands a new starring role with superstar Emily Blunt in a new film.
Ferguson spent years on the small screen before finally getting her big break with Tom Cruise in the latest Mission Impossible film, Rogue Nation, which has proved to be a huge box office hit, according to a Deadline report.
Now, she may be about to become a Hollywood superstar in her own right — and her latest step toward that is a new project called The Girl on the Train, a thriller directed by Tate Taylor, which is an adaptation of a novel by Paula Hawkins.
Ferguson’s role will be that of Anna, one of three main female roles in the thriller. Actress Emily Blunt will play another of the characters, a divorcee that narrates the tale and fantasizes about what she sees as a perfect couple in a house she passed by each day on a train on her way to work — until she sees something shocking happen there, causing her to become wrapped up in the mystery.
Now, audiences will actually know who Rebecca Ferguson is, as opposed to wonder who she was when they packed the theaters to see “Mission: Impossible,” where she played a covert agent opposite Cruise.
And now the offers are coming from all directions, with her reportedly on the short list to be a female lead in the Channing Tatum movie Gambit, an X-Men spin-off. But she jumped out of the running for that in order to be in The Girl on the Train, which has been compared to Gone Girl for its thriller aspects and its adaptation from a popular novel.
That’s not the only work Ferguson has been doing, recently finishing filming on Florence Foster Jenkins, which starred Meryl Streep and Huge Grant. The story is about a New York heiress who becomes a famous opera singer, with Streep playing Jenkins and Grant playing a stage actor who was Jenkins’ partner and manager, while Ferguson plays his wife.
Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation is the fifth installment in the series that first began all the way back in the 1990s, and has proven to be a box office hit every time it comes out. In the film, IMF Agent Ethan Hunt, played by Cruise, is running from the U.S. government while trying to prove the existence of international crime consortium the Syndicate. The film was released on July 31 to tremendous commercial as well as critical success, taking $55.5 million in its first weekend and so far grossing $377 million worldwide and climbing. It had a budget of $150 million.
