Confirmed: Apple is working on super-secret ‘Project Titan’

It's the project that has everyone buzzing, and it could turn the auto world upside down.

An exclusive report has blown the lid on Apple’s top-secret project to build an autonomous self-driving car in the heart of the Silicon Valley — and it’s called “Project Titan.”

The tech giant appears to be actively looking for a secure location where they can test in secret a self-driving car that would take on a growing research and development effort involving mega-companies like Google, according to the Guardian report.

It’s been long rumored about, but Apple has been keeping their lips sealed on the project, attempting to prevent leaks. But the report indicates they may be quite far along, and they have gathered engineers from its Special Project group to meet at a former naval base near San Francisco where such top-secret vehicles are tested — dubbed GoMentum station and sitting on 2,100 acres at a high-security testing ground the military still guards.

The Guardian figured this out by obtaining correspondence through a public records request. They quoted an Apple engineer saying that the company was inquiring about the timing and availability of this particular space, which has been used by Mercedes-Benz and Honda for their own self-driving cars.

Because it is a former military facility that is still guarded, it offers a great place for testing secret technologies that will allow Apple to test outside the public eye.

This is the first time Project Titan appears to have been actually documented. The company has hinted at such a project in the past, with senior VP Jeff Williams stating that the car is the “ultimate mobile device” at one point and that Apple is always exploring various markets.
