Eagle-eyed observers examined some recent images from the Mars Curiosity rover and found an eerie site.
A recent photograph by the Mars Curiosity rover has appeared to have captured a ghostly image of a woman amongst the rocks that adorn its surface — leading the entire Internet to wonder, is this a sign of extraterrestrial life?
Of course not — it’s actually the phenomenon known as pareidolia, which is the tendency of humans to see faces that aren’t really there, part of our evolved ability to spot danger that might be a deadly creature lurking in the bushes, according to a TIME report.
And it’s not the first time it’s happened with images from the Red Planet, which NASA continues to actively explore. There was also a massive crab people thought they could see on Mars — again, an example of pareidolia.
Pareidolia is all part of our brain’s tendency to look for patterns in the things we see. It’s how we can look at a cloud and think it looks like a dog, or how some see images of certain people in, say, a burnt piece of toast.
So what is this ghost woman on Mars? Perhaps it’s just some sort of rock formation, perhaps it’s a shadow, but it is almost certainly not a sign of much else than that.
