The search for two Florida teens who took off on a fishing trip has been called off by family.
US Coast Guard Perry Cohen and friend Austin Stephanos set off on a boat trip for fishing over 15 days ago off the coast of Jupiter Inlet then were reported missing when they did not return home. Their boat was found washed up off the coast of central Florida.
Perry’s mother, Pamela Cohen, had started a GoFundMe page earning near half million dollars in donations to continue the search and offer a reward for boaters, according to Dispatch Times.
“We love our boys and want them home.”
Their families thanked the Coast Guard and all of the friends and volunteers that searched up and down the beach and waters for the boys over the past two weeks.
The Coast Guard and privately funded searches included “hundreds of flight hours; thousands of square miles covered by sea, air and foot; hundreds of thousands of dollars of both monetary and in-kind contributions; and an unprecedented outpouring of support from volunteers from our local community as well as nationwide”, according to the news release from the two families.
Although the families still pray for the return of their boys, their hope has been shattered by time and lost efforts. On Saturday, the families decided to call off the search by the Coast Guard and friends who volunteered to help. Due to the lack of any evidence that the boys had survived, they decided to thank everybody and call off further searches.
The statement added: “We will never stop looking for our boys, Austin and Perry”.
The families are starting a charitable foundation in honor of the boys, Austin and Perry. The foundation was created with the mission of promoting youth boating education with a strong focus on helping to prevent unnecessary incidents.
