Another firefighter dies in California wildfires

California wildfires claim a second firefighter's life while battling the blazes spreading throughout Northern Caifornia

A second firefighter has died this year battling the California wildfires of the Sierra Nevada this weekend.

21-year-old Michael Hallenback of the Sierra foothill community of Shingle Springs, died Saturday while fighting a blaze of fire ignited near Lake Tahoe in Northern California, according to Reuters.

The US Forest Service said Hallenback was the second to die during the fires. Just last month, 38-year-old Dave Ruhl also died fighting another California fire.

“The grief we are feeling at the sudden loss of two of our firefighters, Dave Ruhl … on the Modoc National Forest and now Mike Hallenbeck on the Basin, reminds us of the sacrifices these men and women make every day,” U.S. Forest Service Pacific Southwest Regional Forester Randy Moore said in a statement.

Ruhl was buried on Sunday by family members. He was married and a father of two, from South Dakota. He died from smoke inhalation and carbon monoxide poisoning while bravely battling the Frog Fire in Modoc National Forest on July 31.

His wife, Erin Ruhl, survives him and his two children.

“He loved to hunt, ski, bike and hike,” she said in a statement released by the Forest Service. “He made lasting friends from all over and had an awesome sense of humor.”

After lightening hit Northern California forests on Saturday, fire ignited in several dozen places. Hallenbeck was killed from these outbreaks.

A spokesperson from the Forest Service, Lisa Herron, stated that Hallenbeck died from the blow of a tree falling on him. The agency has assured family and friends that the incident is still being investigated for further information.

California Gov. Jerry Brown said that the long drought and high temperatures proved a perfect condition for deadly wildfire to grow and spread throughout California. Reaching out to potential Republican presidential hopefuls last week, Gov. Brown urged them to share what planned to do about climate change.
