D.C. police shoot a woman at the scene of a fire who was reportedly holding multiple knives as she advanced toward them
A D.C. police officer shot a woman who was equip with multiple knives who refused to surrender the weapons when asked.
The shooting took place on Saturday which was near the scene of a fire in Northeast Washington D.C. After the woman was shot, it is reported that she was then taken to a nearby hospital in stable condition.
At this time, the details as to why the woman was holding the knives and advancing at an officer is not known, according to The Washington Post.
“We don’t really know what’s behind this,” said Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier.
Lanier also added that there are not specific guidelines that would dictate how an officer is to respond in a circumstance like this one.
“There is no policy that dictates every individual officer’s perception and every individual officer’s actions,” she said. “It is something we train officers to handle based on what the situation is.” She also said that when “someone charges an officer with a knife, we have to deal with it the way that we do.”
Bystanders to the shooting were reported as yelling at the woman to put the knives down as she advanced toward the police officer with the knives.
After the shot was fired, the woman remained standing and was said to be breathing and conscious. At that time, she was taken into custody and transported to the hospital for treatment.
The event took place as police officers and firefighters arrived to a call at Clay Terrace for a fire that was reported. When officers arrived on scene, on the way to the fire, is when they encountered the woman with the knives.
According to the fire department, the fire is still under investigation and there has been no clear connection given for the woman to the fire.
