Remember Watson from Jeopardy? IBM is trying to revolutionize medicine with it

The massive supercomputer is getting a $1 billion boost as well as a partnership with CVS to change the way people get health care.

The IBM supercomputer that is known as Watson may bring up memories years ago of taking on Jeopardy! greats like Ken Jennings in the trivia television game show, but it wasn’t just some experimental effort or fun project for IBM — they’re hoping it will completely revolutionize the healthcare industry.

And they are spending some big bucks to do it, as we’ve reported lately. Their latest move was to spend $1 billion on medical imaging company Merge Healthcare, which will be combing with its health analytics unit, which is where Watson resides, according to a Reuters report.

The plan is to use data and images from Merge Healthcare’s management platform and combine it with the cloud-based healthcare system Watson is on, which will give the supercomputer access to a huge amount of data. Watson’s skill is to answer difficult questions posed in natural language, making it artificially intelligent in a way that would help the medical community analyze tons of data from patients’ medical history and combine it with clinical research.

But that’s not the only big event for Watson in recent weeks. It was announced last month that Watson would be partnering with CVS pharmacies in order to provide better patient care. It was another data gathering effort to help give Watson access to lots of patient data so he can put his incredible analysis skills to work, helping healthcare practitioners handle health records and medical claims. CVS, on the other hand, will be able to use Watson to create a more complete picture of a patient’s health profile.

The focus will be on helping patients who have chronic diseases, but if this run with CVS is successful, it could be expanded to regular patients.
