Get ready to shop: No sales tax in these states this weekend!

Only a dozen states offer it, but if you're in the right area, you could save 5% to 10% off of clothing and school supplies, saving a big chunk of money.

It’ll be a tax-free weekend in many states this weekend — but only 12 of them — as shoppers will be free to shop ’til they drop, without having to worry about having sales tax added on to their purchases.

The purpose of such tax free holidays is to allow parents to get back-to-school items as the school year approaches for a little bit less than usual, although even if that’s not what you’re in the market for, you can still benefit from the “holiday,” according to a Heavy.com report.

But it all depends on which state you live in, as only a dozen offer a tax-free weekend. If you’re a resident of Alabama, Florida, Iowa, Missouri, Louisiana, New Mexico, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia, you’re in luck.

The tax-free weekend will take place between Friday and Sunday, so you’ll have one more day to take advantage of lower prices.

Not everything will qualify, as the tax holiday ks primarily aimed at clothing and school supplies. Typically, this will save families about 5 to 10 percent off their purchases — which may not sound like much, but can make a big difference for those on a tight budget who are faced with the daunting prospect of spending perhaps hundreds of dollars to get their kids new outfits for the fall as well as buy the endless amount of school supplies they’ll need, ranging from markers to pencils to notebooks to backpacks. And it all adds up to be quite a burden, especially on lower-income families.

The National Retail Federation says that this tax holiday is “literally about putting clothes on children’s backs,” spokesman Craig Shearman said according to a USA Today report. He said families will likely spend a whopping $630 on back to school goods this year, which at 5 percent would amount to a $30 savings, and at 10 percent would be more than $60 — that could mean an additional outfit or a winter coat.
