In light of the deadly outbreak of Legionnaires, the New York governor is sending state health inspectors to New York City on Saturday.
The inspectors Governor Andrew Cuomo is sending in with inspect cooling towers in response to the deadly disease, according to Reuters.
Linked with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the combined action is coming to action after city officials ordered owners of buildings with cooling towers to disinfect them within a 14 day period.
To aid in responding to the outbreak, the state is supplying free Legionella testing through October to building managers and landlords.
At this time, city health officials have uncovered five cooling towers that tested positive for bacteria that causes the disease, which is a very severe type of pneumonia. The officials said that they think one of those five towers is the original source of the outbreak.
“While it’s clearly a severe outbreak in the Bronx, this is a statewide issue,” State Health Commissioner Howard Zucker said at a news conference.
Zucker also added in that the department had also been testing for the disease not only in New York, but all across the state.
So far there have been ten fatal cases in the South Bronx area and over 100 people sickened by the disease overall since July 10.
One person who fell ill to the disease, Marvin Montgomery who was on dialysis, has filed a notice of claims against the city for negligence.
“Number one, I want to get my client compensated financially for his damages, his permanent damages. Two, I hope this will prompt building owners to take reasonable precautions to protect against a similar outbreak,” said Montgomery’s lawyer.
Health officials have said that they are confident the peak of the outbreak has passed and that there should be a dramatic decrease in the frequency of diagnoses.
