Marijuana found to help heal broken bones

A new study in Israel demonstrated increased recovery with help from the herb.

Yet another argument for smoking the reefer. A new study in Israel found that certain components in marijuana can not only help bones heal faster but also make them stronger and less likely to break again.

The Forward reports that the study, done by Tel Aviv University and Hebrew University, found that the cannabinoid-related compounds in marijuana were helpful in healing broken bones. The main important ingredient in the pot, an anti-inflammatory known as CBD, is not psychoactive and in fact works without the psychoactive aspects of the marijuana.

Dr. Yankel Gabet, one of the leaders of the study, emphasized that the mood aspects of marijuana were not important, as mice injected solely with the CBD instead of the entire plant improved just as quickly. “The clinical potential of cannabinoid-related compounds is simply undeniable at this point,” he said.

“CBD alone makes bones stronger during healing, enhancing the maturation of the collagenous matrix, which provides the basis for new mineralization of bone disuse,” Dr. Gabet continued.

The research may influence further studies into the potential of pot to help with disorders such as osteoporosis. It is already diagnosed medically to combat symptoms of certain cancers and PTSD, as well as to reduce seizures.

Medical marijuana is legal in 23 states and the District of Columbia.
