Facebook loses in court to block New York search warrants

Facebook continued an ongoing battle to block search warrants from accessing users personal data.

New York State Supreme Court Appellate Division has ruled that search warrants seeking to examine user’s data on Facebook for a criminal fraud investigation is lawful according to an NBC news report. Facebook had already lost earlier proceedings and was forced to hand over data before appealing.

The warrants were issued for 400 suspects in an ongoing criminal investigation as other social media companies, civil libertarian interest groups, and prosecutors were watching the case’s unfolding events.

But Facebook isn’t caving in as it’s exploring other creative solutions. “We continue to believe that overly broad search warrants — granting the government the ability to keep hundreds of people’s account information indefinitely — are unconstitutional and raise important concerns about the privacy of people’s online information,” Facebook, which is based in Menlo Park, California, said in a statement.

The Manhattan district attorney’s office noted the unanimous decision regarding the warrants, which were previously approved by a lower-court judge. The decision helped buttress the investigation into fraudulent activity involving disabilities benefits for retirees of New York’s police and fire departments.
