The science community is buzzing today with the launch of a new project at the Royal Society in London.

A new development called “Breakthrough Light” will use the Parkes Telescope in Australia to embark on a ten-year mission to discover if alien life exists in the universe, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.

Ex-physicist turned businessman, Russian billionaire Yuri Milner is providing the funds for the project, while physicist Stephen Hawking plays an advisory role for the development.

This is by far the biggest and most comprehensive search for alien intelligence ever attempted, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.

Astronomers believe that there are billions of planets in our own galaxy where conditions are suitable for other life to evolve.

Therefore, the technology used will scan ten billion radio frequencies simultaneously for signs of intelligent life.

These telescopes will point to the closest stars and galaxies from Earth all while listening for noise in the signal, which could indicate alien life.

“It’s time to commit to finding the answer…we must know,” said Stephen Hawking.

This “Breakthrough Light” plan will also hunt for light-based signals using a telescope at the Lick Observatory in California, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.

All data findings will be public record.

“The search for intelligent life in the universe is going to a completely new level. It is time to open our eyes, our ears and our minds to the cosmos,” said Yuri Milner according to the Sydney Morning Herald.
