Mysterious shipwreck found a mile deep near North Carolina — are there more?

Scientists were stunned to find a shipwreck deep in the Atlantic Ocean that dates to the 18th century, but there could be many more shipwrecks, and here's why...

We reported on a strange shipwreck found off the coast of North Carolina that was incredibly deep below the surface — but more details have emerged that suggests that scientists could find many more of them down there if they look hard enough.

The ship, estimated to have been from the 18th century and found by marine scientists who were actually conducting research on deep-sea methane seeps aboard the research ship Atlantic, had loads of interesting artifacts that are perhaps centuries old, like navigational equipment, glass bottles, iron chains, and other items, according to a Christian Science Monitor report.

And scientists think they are lucky to find it — in fact, there could be countless wrecked ships just waiting to be discovered, according to the report.

The wreck was found in what is called the Gulf Stream, a maritime “highway” that allowed goods to be moved to ports across the Caribbean and North and South America, and therefore it could be absolutely littered with shipwrecks that are, unfortunately, just about impossible to get through. So many ships have sailed down this path, and so many have encountered a terrible storm that has sent them deep into the practically unreachable depths.

That’s too bad for scientists, who have difficulty diving that far, and it ends up being like looking for a needle in a haystack. It’s not exactly an easy or inexpensive process to send a search team a mile deep, and if you can, there’s only so much you can explore. In fact, this research team estimated that they had explored the same area several times and had never seen this wreck, and may have come within 100 meters of it at one point.

But, it does mean that if we ever do develop the capability, there could be a treasure trove of history awaiting us in the ocean depths.
