The new R8 is going to take aim at a number of turbo-charged competitors, including McLaren, Mercedes, and Porsche.
Audi is offering a huge upgrade to its former 4.2-liter, V-8 engine on previous R-8s — a 5.2-liter V-10 engine that will also have the option for turbocharged power.
Audi executives believe the writing is on the wall and that it is time the company produce a powerful sports car that can also boast turbo-charged abilities, according to a Motoring.com.au report.
The R8 will be entering a competitive market, one with other turbo-charged vehicles like the Mercedes AMG GT and GT S, the Porsche 911 Turbo, the Ferrari 488 GTB, and the McLaren 570 S and 650 S. But Audi executives know it’s best to get into this market right away to keep from losing market share in the high-end turbocharged sports car market. The turbocharged R8 engine will make this latest offering a force to be reckoned with, one that any driver with a little cash to spend and an appreciation for top-end performance can appreciate, and Audi is hoping it resonates with that niche and high-dollar market.
The R8 is definitely a fun toy to have if you have cash to burn. It’s a 2-seater sports car with a mid-engine design that uses the quattro permanent all-wheel drive system, a system first introduced back in 2006 by Audi AG and was designed by quattro GmbH, Audi AG’s high-performance private subsidiary. It is based on the platform of its sister vehicle, better known as the Lamborghini Gallardo.
The Audi R8 race car was first unveiled back in 2005 as the new road car for 2007, basing it on the Audi Le Mans quattro concept car that first made its appearance at the 2003 International Geneva Motor Show and 2003 Frankfurt International Motor Show.
The R8 actually began development in 2004 and was first introduced in September 2006 at the Paris Auto Show.
