Brazilian Christians launch ‘sin free Facebook,’ attracts thousands of users

A group of Brazilian Evangelical Christians created a new social network Facegloria that is promised to be a “clean virtual environment.” The network bans any sort of erotic content, swearing, gay material or anything that violates “biblical principles” and has attracted thousands.

There are 600 words blocked from the site and an “Amen” button stands in the place of Facebook’s “Like” buttton.

The creators claim that Facegloria has gained a following of nearly 10o,000 since its launch last month, according to BBC. They aim to reach 10 billion in the next two years, betanews reports.

The site is intended for people who wish to turn social networking into “a reflection of their Christian life.” Currently, the site is only available in Portuguese, but other versions of the site and an app are reportedly in the works.

Web designer Atilla Barros told AFP that there is a lot of “violence and pornography” on Facebook. Facegloria is looking to avoid that sort of content, PC Magazine reports. He added that this is why they decided to create “a network where we could talk about God, love and to spread His word.”

Facebook’s terms of service bans any content that his considered “hate speech, threatening, or pornographic; incites violence; or contains nudity or graphic or gratuitous violence.”Facebook usually takes actions on such matters, but it is difficult to all scammers. Facegloria has not provided details on how they will combat such users.

Barros, alongside the three co-founders, were working in Acir dos Santos’ office, the mayor of Ferraz de Vasconcelos, when the idea struck them. Since then, dos Santos has invested $16,000. “We want to take on Facebook and Twitter here and everywhere,” he said.

One issue the site may face is that it has “face” in its title. In 2010, Facebook sued a site called Faceporn for using “Face” in its name. They were able to trademark the word “face.” That same year, Facebook went after Teachbook for using “book” and bans apps from using “insta” or “gram” in their names.
