Neither male strippers nor Arnold Schwarzenegger were enough for moviegoers to attend theaters this Fourth of July holiday weekend. Newcomers Terminator Genisys and Magic Mike XXL fell short of popular top spot-holders Jurassic World and Inside Out ranking No. 3 and No. 4 at the box office.
Despite the release of the anticipated Magic Mike sequel and the return of the Terminator, Jurassic World ruled with $30.9 million in its fourth week and Pixar’s Inside Out nearly tied with $30.1 million in its third week, according to Associated Press.
Each fell 40% from last weekend. The final numbers will be released Monday.
Both of the newly-released sequels were expected to make between $50 and $60 million. Instead, the No. 3 and No. 4 spots brought in $28.7 million and $12 million over the weekend.
Terminator Genisys is the fifth installment in the popular sci-fi series. Since Wednesday, the Alan Taylor-directed film grossed $44.2 million. The Terminator films have grossed $1.4 billion worldwide at the box office since the original James Cameron-directed film debuted in 1984.
Paramount Pictures and Skydance Productions were hoping to capture the attention of Terminator fans once again and add new fans to the base with the latest installment, which cost $155 million to make. And it looks like they will continue to do so. The sixth and seventh installments are reportedly coming, LA Times reports.
Magic Mike XXL is the sequel to the male-stripper drama starring Channing Tatum. After five years away from life as a stripper, Mike (Tatum) gathers his boys for one last blow out performance.
The film only made $27.1 million during its 5-day release. The first installment, Magic Mike made $39.1 million its opening weekend.
The sequel, which has an audience of nearly 96% women, did not totally flunk. It received a solid A-minus on CinemaScore and a 67% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Universal’s Ted 2 rounded out the top five and a summer full of sequels. It brought in $11 million in its second week dropping 67% since its debut.
Though millions were still made at the box office, Fourth of July weekend usually draws in more moviegoers and bigger numbers. But this year, July 4 fell on a Saturday. Most likely, movie fans ditched the theaters for holiday festivities.
