Pizza delivery driver turned crime-fighting detective

Pizza delivery takes an usual turn as driver stumbles upon illegal cockfighting ring.

It was just a normal night of delivering pizzas for one driver in Winter Haven, Florida, until he stumbled upon an illegal cockfighting operation at one of his delivery stops, according to the Orlando Sentinel.

Immediately, he knew something had to be done, which is when he contacted the authorities.

On Monday the police followed up on the tip, sent in the weekend before, and found more than 123 roosters and chickens on the property. Eliut Juse Serrano Hernandez, who lives at the house, is facing charges of possessing animals and equipment for fighting and leasing property for fights, the report states. All charges are third-degree felonies.

“We really appreciate this pizza delivery driver calling us,” Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said in a news release cited by the Sentinel. “Frankly, I can’t understand why someone would ask for a pizza delivery during an illegal cockfight…”

Police also found a table used for trimming the roosters’ spurs, along with several plastic training gloves and ceramic spurs, which deputies said are attached to roosters and used to easily kill another rooster during a fight, the Sentinel reported.

Hernandez admitted to police that the roosters on the property were his and that he staged fights with the birds on the property. He then said the ring was his and that the boxing gloves and spurs might belong to him.

Two others at the property were arrested on other charges.
