Mr. Matanov apologized for lying to the FBI officials and stated that he did not support or is not a sympathizer of any terrorist organization.
Tamerlan Tsarnaev’s friend was on Thursday sentenced to two and a half years in prison for misleading investigators in the Boston Marathon bombings. According to NYTimes, the man, Khairullozhon Matanov, had dinner with the Tamerlan Tsarnaev and his younger brother, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, after the attack.
Mr. Matanov pleaded guilty to misleading FBI agents after the 2013 bombing by deleting his computer files and failing to disclose contacts he had with the brothers.
Mr. Matanov, who is a Kyrgyzstan native, was not accused of knowing about the bombings beforehand or participating in the attack. Tamerlan Tsarnaev was killed in a shootout with police while his brother Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was convicted and sentenced to death.
The Federal judge blasted Mr. Matanov, who was a Quincy Cabbie for treating the Tsarnaev brothers to dinner on the day of the bombings, saying that he had failed in his duty to humanity, when de impeded the FBI’s investigations.
He further stated that “there is a law that says Taxi drivers understand people. You don’t get us.” Judge William G. Young told Khairullozhon Matanov while accepting his 30-month plea deal for deleting his computer files and failing to disclose information to the FBI he had seen with the Tsarnaev.
Judge Young finished by saying he will never forget the acts of terrorism at the finish line.
After Mr. Matanov completes his 30-month prison sentence, he will be on supervised release for 36 months. He was given credit for the time served since his May 2014 arrest.
Federal prosecutor Scott Garland said that the investigators had to use valuable resources tracking down witnesses at the restaurant where Matanov and the Tsarnaevs dined and analyzing of his computer.
