A Michigan man has been charged after firing a round at another driver after a heated road-rage incident.
In a shocking instance of road rage, a Michigan man learned that he will face up to 27 to 50 years in prison this Friday. According to the Benchmark Reporter, Martin Edward Zale, 69, was charged with the felony killing of a father of two after an altercation on the road.
Authorities reported that Zale was found guilty of murder in the second degree, and three connected weapons charges after fatally shooting driver Derek Flemming last September. Flemming approached Zale’s truck at a red light on Grand River Ave, leading to the commercial district of Michigan town Howell, and was killed by Zale after an altercation.
Sentencing Judge Miriam Cavanaugh claimed that Zale posed a threat to the community and doled out an additional 32 months to 4 years for discharging a firearm, and two additional years for a related felony gun charge. He was also fined $4,160 to cover the family’s funeral expenses.
Zale told jurors that Flemming, who was 43, kicked and punched the side of his truck as he approached it, and then put his arms and heat into Zale’s open window in an apparent attempt to remove Zale from the driver’s seat. Zale claimed to suffer from high blood pressure and a heart condition, and fired one shot out of the window at Flemming.
Zale has had previous run-ins with other drivers, having followed a motorist into a restaurant parking lot and punching the driver after allegedly being cut off. Judge Cavanaugh cited Zale’s apparent lack of remorse as one of the main reasons behind her sentencing.
