Man and 3 children drown after boat flips over in Utah lake

Seven people were out for a boat trip on a nice day on Bear Lake when a storm suddenly swooped down upon them.

It was supposed to be a nice summery day for a boat outing on a lake near Salt Lake City in Utah, when strong winds suddenly threw all seven people into the water and capsized their boat, killing four people.

Three children were among those who died as rescuers scoured the waters of Bear Lake in the midst of bad weather. Three of the seven were rescued and hospitalized, according to an Associated Press report.

Lance Capener, 46, and his wife, 42-year-old Kathy, decided to go out on the lake with their ski boat along with their two daughters and three of their friends on a nice 80-degree day. Temperatures eventually dipped and wind gusts of up to 51 miles per hour were reported nearby, resulting in large waves that destroyed a floating plastic dock at a nearby camp.

Although everyone on board the ship had lifejackets, the water was a frigid 53 degrees Fahrenheit, putting anyone who fell in at risk of hypothermia, and authorities believe they were in the water for at least two hours as waves reached 10 feet.

Rescuers were able to eventually reach them and pull them from the water, but Lance Capener died. His daughters, 13-year-old Kelsey Capener and 7-year-old Kilee Capener, as well as their 13-year-old friend Sierra Hadley, were flown to the hospital but were eventually pronounced dead.

Kathy Capener was hospitalized, as well as 14-year-old Tiffany Stoker and 14-year-old Tylinn Tilley.

Three hours south of the lake, in nearby Utah Lake, there was another boating accident, as rescuers had to pull two people from the water after their sailboat was overturned by high winds. They were wearing life vests and were uninjured.
