Scarlett Johansson mocks ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ in SNL parody

Marvel has released some blockbusters over the years, continuing with Avengers: Age of Ultron this weekend, but none of them have starred a woman — and with Scarlett Johansson hosting Saturday Night Live this weekend, that topic was too much for SNL writers to resist.

Marvel will push out Captain Marvel in 2018, which will feature a female in the starring role, but ScarJo’s Black Widow character won’t be getting her own movie anytime soon, so the writers opted to make fun of what a Black Widow solo flick would look like in Hollywood’s eyes.

The sketch, titled Black Widow: Age of Me, sends up romantic comedies with the tagline “Marvel gets women.” It pokes fun at standard romcom cliches such as the clumsy star female character who has a bunch of supportive friends — the rest of the Avengers, in this case — as she falls for a charming Ultron after running into him in the park while he walks his dogs wearing a suit. Viewers may remember that Scarlett Johansson starred in a romcom called The Nanny Diaries, where her co-star was Chris Evans, the man who plays Captain America.

Although Johansson can complain about Marvels disinterest in giving her a starring role, she can’t complain about how well Avengers: Age of Ultron is doing at the box office. The blockbuster hit scored a massive opening weekend, pulling in $627 million worldwide and doesn’t face any real competition for the No. 1 spot until Mad Max: Fury Road gets released.

Its domestic haul of $187.7 million was the second biggest opening ever at the box office, coming behind only the $207.4 million by The Avengers three years prior.
