Talks organized to quell the growing storm in Burundi

Ever since President Pierre Nkurunziza announced his intention to seek a third term in office, the East African nation of Burundi as been in turmoil. Violent protests have broken out between police and anti-government protestors. At least 30 have died thus far, including the opposition leader who was gunned down this past weekend.

Tomorrow, the 15 members of the UN Security Council will hold closed doors talks about how to advert crisis in Burundi. The Security Council said that it is ready “to respond to violent acts which threaten peace and security in Burundi” in a statement issued after the opposition leader Zedi Feruzi was killed in Bujumbura along with his bodyguard.

In addition, the East Africa Community (EAC) will hold a summit on Sunday in Dar es Salaam. At the moment, it is not known if a representative of Burundi will attend. During the last EAC Summit, held on May 13, the Burundian military attempted to stage a coup in the president’s absence. They failed and protests have continued.

“It’s too soon to know, but Burundi will be represented, that is for sure,” said presidential spokesman Gervais Abayeho.

A long civil war in Burundi was only ended in 2006 when both sides agreed to the Arusha Accords. One of the stipulations was that no leader could rule for more than two five-year terms. The president claims that because for his first term he was appointed by parliament, as opposed to elected by popular vote, he is eligible to stand again for reelection.

Many fear that a crisis in Burundi could reignite the Hutu-Tutsi conflict that left 800,000 dead in the 1994 Rwandan genocide. Already, 70,000 Burundians have fled the country.

Burundi, already severely in debt, will finance the election by trimming budgets of seven ministries including health and education.

The current government has issued a statement today asking ‘patriotic citizens’ to donate money finance the election.
