Obama bans some military-style equipment supplied to police

Obama will ban military equipment from being supplied to police forces.

The move is unexpected, but on Monday President Barack Obama will ban the federal government from providing specific military equipment to police departments across the nation. Some of the banned items, effective immediately, are tracked armored vehicles, grenade launchers and bayonets. Explosives and riot equipment will be harder to get, but not impossible. For those items, law enforcement units will need to provide additional certification and assurances that the gear will be used responsibly.

The Huffington Post reports that the changes were spurred by recommendations made to the president by a White House group in a new report. The task force was created earlier this year by executive order to Obama. The new action regarding military equipment is part of a broader effort to alleviate tensions between law enforcement and minority communities after the highly publicized deaths of several black men at the hands of police in Ferguson, Missouri; Baltimore, and other cities. In Ferguson, law enforcement responded to protests by driving out armored tanks and riot gear, which many saw as making the tense situation only worse. Those riots were in protest of the 2014 death of Michael Brown.

“The idea is to make sure that we strike a balance in providing the equipment, which is appropriate and useful and important for local law enforcement agencies to keep the community safe, while at the same time putting standards in place so that there’s a clear reason for the transfer of that equipment, that there’s clear training and safety procedures in place,” said White House Director of Domestic Policy Cecilia Muñoz on Sunday.
