Panama City spring breakers no longer allowed to beach drink on spring break

Leaders in a Florida city decided Tuesday to ban drinking on the beach during the month of March in an effort to crack down on spring break excesses. This is part of a much larger plan.

During a meeting that addressed college partying and spring break issues, the Panama City Beach city council approved a ban on beach drinking, as reported by Fox News. The council voted unanimously. In order for the proposal to become a law, an ordinance will need to be brought back for two more council votes.

The council also voted on whether to consider the entire month of March as spring break. The vote was 3-2.

The city and county are looking into additional restrictions to decrease the rowdiness that spring break brings, since seven people were injured and shot in March, according to Panama City News Herald.

Officials are planning to clean up Panama City’s image. The city was viewed negatively and heavily criticized after the shootings. In addition, there was an alleged sexual assault incident that occurred behind a popular beach nightclub that stirred up some negative publicity.

The newspaper also reported that the city council also approved three other ordinances before this one. These too are aimed to tone down the college student partying in Panama City during spring break.

Bars would close at 2 a.m. and parking right of way would be banned after dark. Also, the ability to haveĀ  open containers in commercial parking lots, unless under the business’s surveillance, would also be banned. These ordinances would still need further approval.

The new proposals are in addition to 17 other restrictions that were approved last year.
