California man sentenced to one year in prison after beating poodle to death

A man from the Los Angeles area was sentenced Tuesday to one year in jail after prosecutors said he beat his miniature poodle until it died last year. The man was also ordered to attend animal cruelty classes and anger management classes, according to Reuters.

Jason Arnold Vaca, 35, pleaded no contest to a felony count of animal cruelty back in March. Pleading guilty is the legal equivalent of a no contest plea under California law.

Because of the conviction, prosecutors said that Vaca is not allowed to own or live with another pet or animal for 10 years, as reported by Fox News.

A spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office stated that Baldwin Park police responded to a 911 call containing sounds of a man yelling and a dog being hit in March. When the police arrived, they found the dog’s blood in Vaca’s house and on his clothes.

They also found the poodle lying lifeless in Vaca’s backyard. The poodle’s name was Butters.

Vaca was taken into custody after police officially identified him as the owner of the poodle. His motive for killing his dog is unknown, and it was not provided as evidence in trial.

This is not the first time a citizen has displayed cruelty toward a dog this year. Two California men were arrested in January for beating their neighbor’s German Shepard to death. The killing was caught on video, and police officially ruled their behavior as malicious.

And recently, a Chicago man was accused of beating two dogs to death using a sledgehammer, a claw hammer and a bat and suffocating a third dog with a plastic bag. Each of his felony charges carried a sentence of five to seven years, according to the Chicago Tribune.
