Prince to perform at ‘Rally 4 Peace’ concert in Baltimore

Prince will perform his new single “Baltimore” in the city after protests over the death of a man killed while in police custody have roiled the city.

Prince will perform at Sunday evening’s “Rally 4 Peace” concert at the Royal Farms Arena, which is located in downtown Baltimore, along with his rock group 3RDEYEGIRL, according to an Associated Press report.

The event comes after protests and even riots after the death of Freddie Gray, who suffered a fatal neck injury while in the custody of police, causing further anger over the treatment of black people at the hands of police.

Concert attendees are being asked to wear something in the color gray as a tribute to those who have died from violence, and a portion of the proceeds from the concert will be sent to youth charities in Baltimore.

Freddie Gray died April 12 in police custody for allegedly possessing an illegal switchblade. The 25-year-old African- American was being transported in a police van when he fell into a coma and was sent to the trauma center. He died on April 19, and his injuries were to his spinal cord. An investigation into the incident led to six Baltimore police officers suspended temporarily with pay.

The incident outraged Baltimore, with residents flooding downtown to protest, with some becoming violent causing a violent response from the police. The National Guard had to be called in to restore order, and the unrest was so bad that some Orioles games had to be played to an empty stadium.

During one protest on April 25, there were 34 arrests and injuries to 15 police officers. Governor Lawrence Hogan declared a state of emergency after Gray’s funeral on April 27 when things got even worse.
