Actress Sofia Vergara opened up on talk radio about her case with ex-fiance about the frozen embryos.
Actress Sofia Vergara opened up about her embryo problem she has with her ex-fiancé Nick Loeb on talk radio. On Monday morning, Vergara stated that Loeb’s pursuit to make a child from the embryos they had frozen is selfish.
The Modern Family actress from ABC added that a child needs a mother, and it needs to be in a loving relationship in which the parents do not hate each other. This was her reaction to Loeb’s op-ed piece in the papers about his wishes to become a father and using the frozen embryos.
In the meantime, Loeb is suing Vergara to gain control of the embryos so he can be a father. He stated in his piece with the New York Times that women are allowed to bring a pregnancy to terms without the man’s consent. He simply argues that a man should have that same right with his embryos.
Vergara’s argument is that there was a document signed by both parties in which both need to agree to bring the embryos to term. In her defense, Michael Shapiro, a law professor at the University of Southern California, said that this case cannot be compared to the eyes of the law.
Shapiro said that embryos and fetuses are “within the woman’s body and she has the presumptive right to control her body at least up to the point of viability.” He adds that the contract of agreement is not the issue. The issue is Vergara’s constitutional rights.
In the end, Sofia Vergara wants to keep the embryos frozen, but Loeb says that keeping them frozen forever is like killing them. Shapiro in Vergara’s defense stated that embryos are not people.
