Police said Tuesday that a former student pilot stole a plane and took off from a Las Vegas-area airport after facing accusations that he committed a sex crime against a child.
Local media revealed a radio transmission while he was in flight in which he called himself a pedophile, according to Toronto Sun. The transmission was reportedly from Grant; he stated he had been a pedophile since he was 13.
Supposedly, the pilot wanted to go for one last joyride. The speaker in the recording said that he was “just trying to enjoy what’s left of my last flight.”
It is unknown who the speaker was addressing. Las Vegas television station KLAS claimed that the other person was on the ground.
Police received a call from the North Las Vegas Airport Saturday after unauthorized 27-year-old Evan Scott Grant took off around midnight. Grant, who was formerly a student pilot at the airport and lives in Henderson, remained in contact with people on the ground, and air traffic controllers tracked the flights from McCarran International Airport, according to Daily Reporter.
Christine Crews, a spokeswoman for the Clark County Department of Aviation, stated that Grant was flying the stolen plane for nearly an hour. When he landed, he was arrested for grand larceny, according to North Las Vegas police officer Aaron Patty, and he was reportedly released on bond. No one was injured during the incident.
Henderson police stated that the sex crimes against Grant were reported on Friday. He was arrested Tuesday on two felony counts of lewdness with a child along with the grand larceny. His bond is set for $20,000.
Grant could not be reached for a comment. Associated Press attempted to contact Grant, but they could not verify a listed phone number or if he had an attorney to speak for him.
