Trailer blaze kills 3 women in West Caln Township

Seven victims were trapped in the trailer when it caught fire, but four managed to flee the blaze.

A mobile home fire in a Pennsylvania suburb claimed the lives of three women from the same family on Monday, but four other relatives were able to escape, reports the Associated Press.

Firemen were summoned to the double-wide trailer in West Caln Township around lunchtime, said authorities. Weather conditions at the time were extremely fire-friendly – hot, dry and windy – and a fire weather warning had been in effect for southeastern parts of Pennsylvania, said emergency officials. By the time firefighting crews arrived on the scene, the trailer was engulfed in flames.

West Caln police Chief Curt Martinez confirmed that seven people, all relatives, were in the home when the fire started. Four of them, including two children, were able to escape. The names of the victims are being withheld until other family members are able to be notified.

The fire is not currently considered suspicious, but an investigation into its cause is ongoing, said Martinez and Wagontown fire chief Todd Ziegler.

The weather was considered a factor in the speed and ferocity of the blaze because conditions were ideal for the onslaught of fire, Ziegler said. Temperatures  were hovering in the 80s, with low humidity and strong wind gusts topping out at over 20 mph. The National Weather Service had sent out a red-flag alert for the region due to the ongoing fire danger. Flames spread from the home to nearby woods but were extinguished.

The remnants of the dwelling still smoldered late Monday as neighbors looked on; some reported to local news outlets that the victims had gathered because of a recent death in the family.

“My heart kind of fell out of my chest when I heard about it,” neighbor Chris O’Hagan said to the Philadelphia Inquirer.
