‘Kylie Jenner Challenge’ puts teens at risk for permanent deformities

Teens across the nation are using a shotglass to mimic Kylie Jenner's puffy lip look.

Kylie Jenner has a look that people would die for – or at least wound themselves. The reality star has many copycats harming themselves to get her pouty lips in the “Kylie Jenner Challenge.”

Jenner, the 17-year-old younger sister of Kim Kardahsian, has insisted she has full lips only through makeup and not through surgery. However, many fans are trying to get her full lips by inserting shot glasses into their lips and sucking repeatedly to achieve the look.

The challenge is leading to bruised lips because blood is unnaturally pulled to the skin’s surface. Fans have posted pictures of themselves online with inflated lips.

The full-lipped look won’t last no matter how hard her fans try.

“It would be very short-lived and it wouldn’t last for the evening,” said Dr. Barney Kenet, a dermatologist. “Once you remove the pressure it’s going to [dissipate].”

The Kylie Jenner challenge could cause long-term damage to teens’ lips. “Repeated attempts can lead to some potential deformity,” added Kenet. “The tissue is more delicate than other areas of the body. It can create negative pressure or dilate the vein.”

Kenet said he was disturbed by the unnatural beauty standards that teenage girls are faced with online.

“I think the stuff you used to see with women you now you see in teens,” said Kenet.

Jenner addressed the controversy over the Kylie Jenner Challenge on Twitter. “I want to encourage people/young girls like me to be YOURSELF & not be afraid to experiment w your look,” tweeted Jenner.
