Teens who crushed woman’s skull during ‘prank’ will be tried as adults

Teenagers face as much as 25 years in prison for badly maiming an Ohio teacher.

Three teenagers will be tried as adults for seriously injuring a teacher after throwing rocks off a highway overpass.  Keefer McGee, Dylan Lahr and Tyler Porter will be removed from the juvenile justice system.

The teens dropped a 5-pound rock through the windshield of Ohio teacher Sharon Budd’s car. Her head was crushed as a result of the injuries. She has had several surgeries to repair the damage to her skull.

Budd said she wanted the teens to be tried as adults.

“I think they should be tried as adults because I think when you’re 17 or 18, you do make choices and you know what you’re doing,” said Budd before Judge Michael Sholley made his ruling.

“From what his role was, from what I know, the sentencing seems appropriate,” said Budd’s husband, Randy.

“And after the punishment, they always have the opportunity for rehabilitation if that didn’t do it,” added Budd.

Bruce Manchester, Lahr’s psychiatrist, wants the defendants to go to psychiatric facilities instead of jail.

“The impact on the Budd family is horrific. No ifs, ands or buts. Horrific. That is a major consideration to be taken in by the court. But that I submit has to be balanced off against what is going to take place with or without the court’s intervention,” said Manchester.

Despite Budd’s horrific injuries, Sharon’s family say she is rehabilitating well. “I’m surprised everyday with something she does and how sharp she can be,” said Sharon’s son, Joey.

Sharon herself joked about her reconstructive surgeries. “I don’t wake up like one day and go, ‘I’m a new person and I’ve changed so much. I’m fabulous now,’ ” said Budd.

“She’s happy,” said Randy Budd. “I ask her every day, I go, ‘Sharon, are you happy?’ and she says, ‘I’m happy.’ I go, ‘great.’ She has a really great attitude.”
