Shark Attack: Woman killed off coast of Maui, authorities shut down beach

No one saw the attack, but snorkelers pulled the 65-year-old woman out of the water with shark-like injuries to her torso.

A shark has killed a 65-year-old woman near Maui in Hawaii on Wednesday, according to authorities.

The Maui Fire Department issued a statement indicating that they had located an unresponsive woman who was found about 200 yards from shore by snorkelers. The woman was taken to the beach and paramedics attempted to revive her, but to no avail, according to an Associated Press report.

Authorities believe she was attacked by a shark based on the injuries she suffered, which were to her torso, and attack evidently occurred in the Kanahena Cova part of the Ahihi-Kinau Natural Area Reserve on Maui, according to the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources as quoted in the report.

Kekoa Kaluhiwa, who is the deputy director of the state Department of Land and Natural Resources, was quoted by the AP as saying that authorities were investigating the attack, and that signs would be posted along the coast warning beachgoers to beware. She added that her “condolence” goes to the victim’s family.

Meanwhile, authorities sent crews on jet skis to get people out of hte water and the beach was shut down to human activity. It may be reopened at noon on Thursday if officials give the go-ahead.

Apparently, no one saw the shark attack. It’s the first fatal one this year in Hawaii.
