Authorities find body of missing California woman in forest near San Diego

Erica Alonso had gotten into a fight with her boyfriend in the early morning hours on the day she went missing back in February.

The body of a California woman who was reported missing has been found in a remote section of the Cleveland National Forest east of San Diego, according to various media reports.

The remains of 27-year-old Erica Alonso were found by biologists late Monday night, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, and an autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.

In comments to the Orange County Register, Erica’s father, Isaac Alonso, said he believes someone killed her, and he “want[s] them to pay.”

She was last seen on Feb. 15 when she left with her boyfriend for Valentine’s Day and befriended a couple at a Costa Mesa lounge before leaving at 1:30 a.m. and going to her boyfriend’s home in Irvine. The two had an argument, and she left the home at around 3:45 a.m.

Two days later, the police were called when she was a no-show at work, leading to a crowdfunded campaign to raise money for an extensive search, and the Alonso family offering a reward of $5,000 for any information on her whereabouts.

Then, on March 25, her car was discovered in Aliso Viejo.

And finally, on Monday night, some biologists were walking through the forest at around 10:30 p.m. when they came upon a body near the Ortega Highway. Authorities came to a preliminary identification that it was her, although they are awaiting fingerprints and dental records to confirm it.
