Texans pray in support of Blue Bell Creameries

"Hearts grieve" as a third recall removes all product from store freezers.

More than 200 Texans devoted to Blue Bell ice cream massed for a prayer vigil Saturday, showing their steadfast support for the product’s manufacturer, Blue Bell Creameries. Manufacturing of the product has stopped since the deadly Listeria bacteria was discovered in two of the company’s plants earlier this year.

The one-hour vigil was held in the town square of Brenham, the location of Blue Bell Creameries headquarters. Led by pastors, attendees prayed for victims and also that the company will be successful in discovering how the contamination occurred.

Many of the attendees wore hats and shirts with Blue Bell’s name on them. A pastor with St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Brenham, Phil Fenton, said that hearts are grieving “that our beloved product … could ever become a source of harm to anyone.”

Plants owned by Blue Bell Creameries in Brenham, Alabama and Oklahoma employee 3,800 people, none of which are expected to be laid off. All of the manufacturing facilities will all remain closed through at least May 8, however, while employee trainings take place and deep cleanings are conducted.

The series of product recalls began after three people died, all of whom consumed ice cream from one specific machine in Brenham. A second recall – this time for product manufactured in Oklahoma – was for three-ounce ice cream cups sold to institutions and educational facilities. Most recently, all Blue Bell ice cream, sherbet and frozen yogurt products have been voluntarily recalled.

In addition to the three dead in Texas, illnesses have been recorded in Arizona, Oklahoma, Texas and Kansas.
