Rate of binge drinking in women is rising at ‘really, really scary’ rate

The report states binge drinking for women rose 36 percent from 2002-2012.

More and more women are popping bottles these days.
In fact, women are pretty much out drinking men at a soaring pace, a recent report revealed. The American Journal of Public Health reported that binge drinking for women had risen nearly 36 percent from 2002 to 2012. Men rose 23 percent.
“It seems like women are trying to catch up to the men in binge drinking,” American Journal of Public Health lead reporter Ali Mokdad told Kaiser Health News. “It’s really, really, scary.”
There’s no pin-point trigger to drastic rise in drinking habits, but journalist Gabrielle Glaser told the Huffington Post that the “historic indifference of the mostly male research community to focusing on gender differences in the science of disease.”
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, binge drinking is categorized as one person having four or more drinks in one sitting and excessive drinking to be 15 or more drinks per week.
In popular culture, men were traditionally the dominant drinker — as seen on the big screen in films like ‘Old School’ and ‘Animal House.’ But Kaiser Health News suggested that it’s more acceptable today for women to drink.
For instance, Tom Greenfield, scientific director at the Alcohol Research Group in Oakland, Calif., told Kaiser Health News that a large influx of professionals in large cities have spurred a rise in drinking. Many of techies and wealthy professionals are notoriously heavy drinkers.
Another reason in the jump in drinking, the Kaiser Health News pointed out, is that taxes on alcohol have hardly risen. Hence, booze have become cheaper.
Yet in the end, the reality is that binge drinking catches up after a while. The American Journal of Public Health reported that alcohol results in 88,000 deaths and costs Americans nearly $224 billion a year. Moreover, roughly 38 million Americans are excessive drinkers.
