The game takes place in a dystopian future when a CIA insider leaks a massive amount of intelligence destabilizing the world -- and the game appears to be taking some very direct shows at NSA leaker Edward Snowden.

The trailer for Call of Duty: Black Ops 3, one of the most anticipated video game releases on the horizon, has been released, and it’s got some interesting parallels to the modern world — and, some might argue, it may take a shot at the recent leaks of Edward Snowden.

The latest in the COD series features a sort of dystopian sci-fi world in which some of the fears of today are manifested in the game world, such as the devastating effects of climate change that have limited the Earth’s resources and caused nations to battle with each other, as well as the rise of lethal, humanoid robots and super-soldiers that have become more machine than man, according to a Mashable report.

Those concepts aren’t particularly new, but one game element might be: an Edward Snowden-like character who is central to the game’s story and comes off as a bit of a villain who destabilizes the world.

COD:BO3 is the third in the best-selling series of first-person military shooters, and its publisher Activision spent more time in development on this game than any other in the franchise — and executives were happy to show off that extra work at the headquarters of developer Treyarch in Santa Monica, Calif., recently.

In the game, you play as a member of a “black ops” team that operates outside of normal rules of the military and of diplomacy, and you are given authority to kidnap and torture people as you see fit as long as it helps you achieve your objective. It starts with a secret CIA site located in Singapore that suddenly goes “off the grid” without warning.

Suddenly, there is the largest leak of intelligence in the history of the military — kind of like what happened with Snowden — and utter chaos follows as covert operations around the world unravel. It’s the player’s job to go behind enemy lines to “uncover the disturbing truth,” Jason Blundell, the game’s campaign director at Treyarch, said according to the report.

Blundell said the similarity is intentional, and the development team is always reading up on the news and using it for ideas for video games.

Some might even argue that the game takes a standpoint that what Snowden did was destructive, as the leaks in this game result in the release of the locations of secret ops and weaknesses in the military.

Black Ops 3 comes out in the fall.
