Sex abuse defendant kills self as jury deliberated: report

The New Hampshire piano teacher was accused of molesting an 11-year-old boy in 2002; the jury ended up deadlocked and the judge declared a mistrial.

A 75-year-old man in New Hampshire killed himself while awaiting for the jury to reach a verdict on charges of sexually assaulting a former student when he worked as a piano teacher.

Jurors announced they were deadlocked five hours later in the case, unable to reach a verdict on the six felony counts for aggravated sexual assault again John Goodwin, who is from Atkinson, N.H., according to a USA Today report. As a result, the judge declared a mistrial.

The jury had been deliberating since 9 a.m. and was not informed of Goodwin’s shooting. Jurors were reported crying as court officers took them to their cars.

Goodwin apparently shot himself in the parking lot outside the courthouse shortly after 11 a.m., with a witness saying that he heard a gunshot shortly after seeing a man walking toward bushes in the parking lot.

Although sheriff’s deputies and bailiffs attempted to give the man first aid before first responders could arrive, they were unable to save him. One woman who appeared to be greatly upset was seen holding the man.

Goodwin had taught piano to children along with his wife for decades in their home, but in 2002, Goodwin is accused of molesting an 11-year-old boy and continued to do so for three years. The former student finally came forward in 2013, saying that he waited this long because he was embarrassed about the incident and didn’t want anyone to find out about it. The boy testified at his trial on Tuesday.

Goodwin pleaded not guilty. His wife testified, but he did not.
