First-ever animated ‘Spider-Man’ theatrical release coming in 2018

Sony Pictures Chairman Tom Rothman announced the LEGO Movie directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller will create an animated Spider-Man film for the studio.

The new film will “explore the graphic roots of the character and co-exist with our live action entries,” said Rothman. According to the press release, the film will be independent of Sony’s other Spider-man films. The animated movie will come out after Spider-Man makes appearances in two live-action films in 2017.

Lord and Miller, who in addition to the LEGO Movie have directed Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and the films in the 21 Jump Street franchise, will be writing the script treatment and producing. There is no word as to whether the pair will direct the film.

This is the latest of several comic book related projects Lord and Miller will be involved with in the near future. They are also planning to make a live-action Flash movie and an animated Batman movie based on Will Arnett’s portrayal of the character from the LEGO Movie.

In addition to Lord and Miller, Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach, and Amy Pascal will also help produce the project. Sony is planning to revamp the its entire Spider-Man franchise in the coming years, re-booting the live-actions films for the third time with a new lead.
