UVA dean slams Rolling Stone for implicating her as negligent in a student’s rape case

Associate Dean Nicole Eramo has dedicated her life’s work to counseling young victimized women, and men in some cases, in the trials and tribulations of college campus life. One issue that she deals with frequently and passionately is, unfortunately, rape. This can be the absolute darkest moment in a person’s life and Emaro is there to help them. She has proven to be a beacon of hope and strength to many, including Emily Renda, a 2014 graduate from the University of Virginia (UVA). Renda came to Dean Eramo with her own tragic case of rape and says of Eramo, “All the things she did and continues to do are really in the best interest of students,” according to the Washington Post.

Eramo’s life’s work was thrown into question, though, when six months ago the Rolling Stone magazine published an article that portrayed Eramo as callous and unfeeling towards students’ rape tragedies. The Rolling Stone article, since retracted, talked about a specific case where a female student claimed she was gang-raped at a fraternity in 2012. The article purported that UVA systematically pushes rape cases to the side and leaves victims stranded and helpless with nowhere to turn.

Eramo has made her first public remarks since the article was published last November. She slammed the magazine for their “false and grossly misleading” depiction of her, her attitude and her entire career. Eramo wrote a letter to the Rolling Stone publisher Jann Wenner saying, “Using me as the personification of a heartless administration, the Rolling Stone article attacked my life’s work.” She went on to say that her name will “remain forever linked to an article that has damaged my reputation and falsely portrayed the work to which I have dedicated my life.”
