Critics worry that new Pixar film is too ‘mature’ for children

Disney’s Inside Out will officially premiere at the Cannes Film Festival later this year before its June 19 theatrical release, but the studio treated attendees of their CinemaCon presentation on Wednesday with the first screening of the upcoming film. Inside Out is the first Pixar big screen offering since summer 2013, and like many of Pixar’s most successful films, is being praised for its mature and intelligent storyline.

Inside Out follows five different emotions – joy, anger, disgust, fear and sadness – as they try to run the inner workings of an 11-year old girl going through a life-changing move away from her friends to San Francisco. Joy, who is voiced by Amy Poehler, becomes separated from the rest of the team of emotions during the tough transition and the other emotions try to push the young girl away from the values and memories which make her who she is. While some critics questioned whether the concept is too complicated or mature for younger viewers, Pixar heard similar concerns before the release of their box office hit Toy Story 3.

During their presentation in Las Vegas, Disney also released trailers for June 22’s Tomorrowland, July 17’s Ant-Man and Dec. 18’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens. While Disney has two Pixar films coming out this year in Inside Out and Nov. 25’s The Good Dinosaur, Disney Animated Studios doesn’t have a film coming out until Zootopia next March.

“I’d say we have some very exciting things on the horizon,” said Disney’s worldwide distribution chief Dave Hollis. “The studio is looking forward to what we expect to be an astounding 2015. When it comes to big theatrical event films, our lineup paralleled between the Disney, Pixar, Marvel and LucasFilmbrands. For the first time, each of those brands will be on display in 2015.”
