Protestor ‘glitter bombs’ ECB press conference

A press conference about the European Central Bank (ECB) was interrupted today as a protestor rushed the stage and president Mario Draghi. While seated at a table under the bright lights of a television studio, Josephine Witt, 21, jumped on the table and threw confetti and papers in a sort of “glitter bomb” effect while continually shouting “End ECB dictatorship!” in German.

The president looked stunned for a moment and then regained his composure as various men slowly dragged away the female activist. A video captured the event.

Witt’s T-shirt displayed the same slogan but “dictatorship” was spelled as “dick-tatorship”. She rushed the stage so quickly that she could easily have attacked Draghi physically. He briefly held up his hands in defense but dropped them when it quickly became clear she did not intend physical harm.

Although Witt is a member of FEMEN, an organization known for international topless protests, she said in a tweet that her action was not affiliated with the group. She considers herself  “a freelance-activist,” she said.

In an email to USA TODAY, Witt said that, although Mario Draghi who has been called a frog, “it was me who jumped.” The main intent of the European Central Bank to use monetary policy to maintain price stability within the Eurozone.

The entire episode was just under 30 seconds and Witt clearly enjoyed herself throughout. Draghi proceeded with his remarks, which included the announcement that monetary rates would remain unchanged. The ECB said Witt was registered with their conference as a journalist but “for a news organization she does not represent.”
