Marco Rubio announces Republican presidential bid

U.S. Florida Senator Marco Rubio is officially publicizing his presidential candidacy with a focus on foreign policy and his ability to handle threats to America.

The Cuban-American’s election strategy for 2016 will be a “peace-through-strength” global view with a substantial focus on enhanced defense spending, according to CBC News.

He will be formally announce his bid during a speech at Miami’s Freedom Tower. Rubio, 43, is emphasizing this spot where thousands of Cuban exiles fled the communist-run island in the 1960’s and were first registered by the U.S.

Rubio’s spark to jump in and catch the campaign attention came exactly when Hillary Clinton declared her candidacy for the Democratic presidential nomination. Clinton is already hitting the campaign trail on Tuesday at her first stop in Iowa. And with Clinton being the top contender for the Democratic Party so far, the Republican winner is going to have to be fluent in world affairs.

Although Rubio only comes in with single digits in opinion polls for likely Republican contenders, his supporters believe that he will surge in numbers as soon as voters hear what he has to say.

Rubio is the third major Republican figure so far to announce their candidacy. The other two are Senator Ted Cruz of Texas and another Cuban-American, Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky. But still, the Republican field is expected to continue growing with other likely candidates like former Florida Governor Jed Bush.

Elliott Abrams, a former senior diplomat who served the George W. Bush and Ronald Reagan presidencies, also advises Rubio. He has said that the senator’s Cuban background has made him more sensitive to issues of freedom abroad.

“The whole question of the expansion of freedom of democracy is of greater interest to him as a foreign policy theme than it is for many other people.”
