Police caught on tape beating California man after his arrest; 10 deputies placed on leave

Francis Pusok's lawyer said he is recovering well after being beaten by police officers follow a two-and-a-half-hour chase in the desert.

A Southern California man who was caught on video being beaten by sheriff’s deputies after a two-and-a-half-hour chase is recovering after receiving medical treatment in jail, his attorney says.

The violent arrest of Francis Pusok, 30, was captured on a TV news helicopter and led to an FBI civil rights investigation, with 10 deputies being placed on leave as the probe goes on, according to an Associated Press report.

San Bernardino County Sheriff John McMahon said he was “disturbed and troubled” by the video, which showed deputies punching and kicking Pusok as he lay on the ground, apparently not doing anything to resist.

Pusok had fled from police in a car and then tried to escape authorities on a horse in the desert as deputies chased him on foot, attempting to serve a search warrant in an investigation into identity theft. After falling from the horse, a deputy ran up and fired a taser, which officials claimed didn’t work on him.

As Pusok lay face down with his hands behind his back, a deputy punched and kicked him while another kicked him in the groin. Later, other deputies arrived.

Pusok has pleaded no contest to criminal charges included attempted robbery, animal cruelty, and resisting arrest, according to court records.

Pusok has allegedly threatened to kill a deputy before and once shot a puppy in front of his family members. However, his lawyer, Jim Terrell, said that isn’t relevant in this particular case.

Pusok is facing charges of felony evading, horse theft, and possessing stolen property.

His beating is just the latest in a series of violent police incidents across the country that have led to outrage over police behavior. The most recent was a shooting death of an unarmed black man as he fled from a police officer in Charleston, South Carolina.
