A total of 30 people were evacuated who lived within a 1.5-mile radius of the accident in a rural area.
A train loaded with ammonia has derailed in rural South Carolina, resulting in the evacuation of 30 people.
Authorities evacuated everyone within a 1.5-mile radius of the train derailment, which took place near the town of Trenton, according to an Associated Press report.
No one was injured in the crash, which happened Friday night, but officials confirmed that one of the Norfolk Southern tankers in the train was carrying anhydrous ammonia, and the car immediately behind that tanker was carrying ammonia nitrate, Derrick Becker, public information officer for the South Carolina Emergency Management Division, told the AP.
Aiken County Hazmat officials were assisting at the scene, and there were no visible liquids or plume, according to Becker.
There was no indication of how many cars were in the train or any further details on the accident, and the AP was not able to immediately reach officials with Norfolk Southern.
Ammonia is corrosive and can be extremely dangerous to humans. Exposure to high concentrations of the substance in the air can cause burning of the eyes, nose, throat, and respiratory tract. It can result in blindness, damage to the lungs, and even death.
