Texas man executed after killing a cop in 2002

Kent Sprouse, 42, was put to death earlier this year in Texas. Texas is the country’s most active state when it comes to death row inmate executions, and Sprouse’s charge was the murder of a Dallas-area police office in 2002. The slain police officer was Harry Marvin “Marty” Steinfeldt III, 28, a police officer in Ferris, who was shot and killed by Sprouse after he also killed a customer in a convenient store.

Nola.com reports that according to witnesses to the incident in 2002, Sprouse walked into Ferris Food Mart wielding a shotgun, made a purchase, then fired the gun at two men by a pay phone outside. He proceeded to his car, which seemed to be giving him some trouble, and then shot and killed Pedro Moreno, 38, who was pumping gas nearby. What happened next was a full-on shoot out.

Officer Steinfeldt responded to the 911 call where he was shot and hit by Sprouse twice under the arm where his bullet-proof vest did not cover. Steinfeldt managed to pump out 17 shots, reloading once, and injuring Sprouse in his chest, leg and hand.

Before his execution, Sprouse apologized to the families of his victims, and his own family, for all the trouble he’s caused. Then he thanked his family for their support. He finished his last words with, “I guess that’s it.”

The execution drug pentobarbital was injected into Sprouse, and he took six deep breaths, then began snoring. Within a minute, all movement ceased. He was pronounced dead 22 minutes later at 6:33 CDT.
