Kathy Bates ‘is running the Hotel’ on next season of American Horror Story

Cast changes on FX’s anthology series continue as Jessica Lange steps out and Lady Gaga steps in.

Ryan Murphy announced the news of Kathy Bates’ return to American Horror Story’s fifth season on Twitter earlier this afternoon, tweeting: “Kathy Bates is running the Hotel. #AHSSeason5”.

The forthcoming season will air later this year on FX, and according to Murphy’s Tweet, Bates is assumed to be taking on a leading role in the season running the hotel.

The Golden Globe winner has already played significant supporting roles on the past two seasons of AHS; Kathy won an Emmy for her role in Season’s 3: Coven.

In addition to Bates, heavy hitting star power in the persons of Lady Gaga, Chloe Sevigny and Wes Bentley will be joining the Misery star on ‘Hotel’, while the former American Horror Story lead Jessica Lange exits the anthology after starring in all the previous seasons.

When asked about the new AHS season at Paleyfest in March earlier this year, Ms. Lange said: “We’ve had a great run. I have absolutely loved doing these four characters, and in all the madness, I loved the writers, actors, Ryan, the whole insanity of it, the stories, shooting here, shooting in New Orleans, everything. To cut to the chase, yes, I’m done.”

Another non-returning anthology cast member is Evan Peters, but Peters noted also at PaleyFest that that did not “mean we won’t see him on future seasons”.

Despite all the departures, Kathy Bates also mentioned at the Los Angeles TV Festival that she’s very excited to have Gaga join the AHS ensemble. “I’m a big fan of hers, my jaw dropped when I saw her on the Oscars,” Bates said.
