Gripping ‘Serial’ murder case will be further explored in spin-off podcast

Despite claiming his innocence, Adnan Syed has spent the past 15 years in prison for murder. His case has been made popular nationwide due to a popular podcast called Serial. Now, that the podcast will move on to another topic, Syed’s story will continue on its own.

It was reported on Wednesday that Syed’s story in the podcast started by reporter Sarah Koenig was the most downloaded in 2014. According to Apple, the podcast was also the fastest to reach five million downloads.

The podcast followed Syed’s story on how he claimed innocent for the murder of his ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee. In 2000, Syed was sentenced to life with an additional 30 years.

The podcast became very popular because of this story, and Koenig’s investigation on the case is now over. The reporter has moved on to another case in her podcast Serial. However, Adnan Syed keeps fighting for his innocence, so a new show will be started just for his case.

The reason why Syed will get his own show is because the Maryland Court of Special Appeals agreed to hear from Syed’s lawyers. Syed  had requested for a new trial with his lawyers, and the court is now ready to hear the arguments.

Rabia Chaudry, the lawyer who alerted Koenig of Syed’s case, told PBS that the loyal podcast listeners from Serial want to hear the updates on the case. Since Koenig’s podcast has move on to another case, Syed’s case will get its own.

The podcast is called Undisclosed: The State v. Adnan Syed, and it will start on Monday. It will be released every two weeks after the first Monday.
